"Else" on the sturgeon

The Stör ferry Else is a cable ferry across the Stör between the communities of Beidenfleth and Bahrenfleth .

Traffic significance and tourism attraction

The ferry connection is one of the few traffic connections between the Wilstermarsch and the Krempermarsch . Unless you are in the lower reaches of the sturgeon only two further possibilities for Störquerung: The 12 km upstream located bascule bridge Heiligenstedten and the 10 km downstream from the location at the mouth Störsperrwerk leading B 431 .

There are no other ferry connections over the Stör; the Breitenburg ferry, for example, was replaced by a bridge in the 17th century. There are ferries across the Kiel Canal and the Elbe ferry in Glückstadt only a short distance away . The Else sturgeon ferry is also a tourist attraction.

The ferry has been the 18th member of the German Ferry Route since June 2018 .

business

The ferry is operated by a private company, the "Fähre Else GbR" from Wewelsfleth . It only runs during the day; the crossing takes about a minute. Today's Else ferry replaced the old ferry of the same name in 2006, which had been in operation since 1940.

society

The support association “Störfähre Else eV” is committed to the continued existence of ferry operations.
