Mauro Matías Zárate (born March 13, 1987 in Haedo , Buenos Aires Province ) is an Argentine - Chilean football player . The striker is currently under contract with Boca Juniors .
Club career
CA Vélez Sarsfield
The striker played for CA Vélez Sársfield as a youth . On April 21, 2004 he made his debut for the professional team in the Argentine Primera División . In the Apertura 2006 Zárate was top scorer with twelve goals together with Rodrigo Palacio .
Al-Sadd / Birmingham City
In June 2007 he joined the Al-Sadd association in Qatar .
On January 21, 2008, Zárate then moved to the English Premier League at Birmingham City on loan until the end of the season - plus an option for a permanent commitment afterwards .
Lazio Rome / Inter Milan
After the relegation of the Blues , Zárate left England in the direction of Lazio Rome in the Italian Serie A , where he was hired again, initially on loan, with the later option of a permanent commitment. After a successful loan - Zárate scored 13 league goals, among others - Lazio drew this option and signed the striker for 20 million euros. At Lazio, Zárate received a contract until 2014 with an annual salary of around two million euros. In his second season with the Romans, the striker was only able to score three league goals, and in his third season nine.
On August 31, 2011, Zárate was loaned to Inter Milan . The Nerazzurri also receive an option to buy. In the second group game of the 2011/12 Champions League season on September 27, 2011, he scored his first goal in the Milanese jersey when he scored the 3-2 winner at CSKA Moscow . In total, he scored only three goals for the Nerazzurri in 31 competitive appearances .
After the end of the loan to Inter, Zárate returned to Lazio for the 2012/13 season. As early as November 2012 it was announced that Zárate would leave Lazio in January 2013 because he was no longer part of the starting line-up, but was the best paid player for the Romans. In December 2012, Zárate was suspended from Lazio for refusing to sit on the bench in a league game against Inter Milan.
Return to Vélez Sarsfield
In July 2013, Zarate returned to his first club, Vélez Sarsfield. He won the Supercopa Argentina 2013 with Vélez Sarsfield and took the top scorer's crown in the Argentine Primera División .
West Ham United / Queens Park Rangers
In the summer of 2014, Sam Allardyce brought Zárate to West Ham United in London , where he signed a 3-year contract. On August 23, he scored in his first championship game for the "Irons" with a remarkable volley and helped West Ham to a 3-1 away win at Crystal Palace . After half a year at West Ham United, he was loaned to the Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season. After only four missions, he returned to West Ham and completed 15 games for the Hammers in the first half of the 2015/16 season .
AC Florence
In January 2016, Zárate moved to the Italian first division club Fiorentina .
Watford FC
In January 2017, Zárate joined Watford FC . In October it was awarded to Al-Nasr and during the winter break on to his former club CA Vélez Sársfield .
National team
With the Argentine U-20 team, Zárate won the 2007 World Youth Championship .
Trivia
Mauro's older brother Sergio played in the Bundesliga for 1. FC Nürnberg and Hamburger SV in the 1990s, where he made a total of 80 games and 23 goals. Today he acts as Mauros manager and advisor.
