Eduardo Antonio "Toto" Salvio (born July 13, 1990 in Avellaneda , Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine football player in the position of a striker and winger , who can be used in all other offensive positions due to his offensive strength.

He is currently in the squad of the Portuguese first division club and record champions Benfica Lisbon . In 2009 Salvio made his debut for the senior national team of Argentina .

Club career

The time at CA Lanús

After Salvio, who was born in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires, had already been active in the CA Lanús youth team for a few years , he made it from the local youth department to the professional team of the Lanús city club. There he finally made his professional debut in the Torneo Apertura 2008 when he came on as a substitute for Agustín Pelletieri in the 70th minute of the 2-1 away defeat by Boca Juniors on August 24, 2008 . After another substitution (a full half-time) Salvio was used from the start in his only third league appearance and played through until the 86th minute before he was replaced by the more experienced Adrián Peralta . He finally caused a stir on his fourth league appearance, a 4-2 win over the Argentinos Juniors . He scored the goal in the eighth minute of the game to lead his team 1-0, then got the yellow card for taking off his jersey and scored the goal to make his team 3-1 lead just twelve minutes later; the other two goals of the CA Lanus scored the Argentine striker and ex-international José Sand .

This was followed by further championship appearances and goals until the end of the season in mid-December 2008, e.g. B. at the Campeonato Sudamericano Sub-20 of 2009 in Venezuela (last place in the final group for the team). After the Torneo Clausura in 2009 as a regular player, some international clubs announced their interest in the young and agile offensive player; In addition to English clubs such as Manchester United , Italian representatives such as AC Milan , AS Roma , SSC Napoli and Juventus Turin , these were also clubs from Spain (e.g. Real Madrid ) or Germany (e.g. FC Bayern Munich ).

The demand for Salvio increased especially after the conclusion of the Torneo Clausura 2009 in third place in the table at the beginning of July. Already at that time, another Spanish club, Atlético Madrid , was interested in Salvio, but could not initially provide the £ 10 million demanded by CA Lanús , which is why the club feared the player's departure to Manchester United. In turn, they would not have had to worry about receiving the money they needed if the Argentine signed up after Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid for the equivalent of £ 80m. But in addition to the lack of money worries, there was also no change of the much-courted Eduardo Salvio, who completed another season at CA Lanús and finally started with the team in the Torneo Apertura 2009 .

After he was used in the Copa Libertadores 2009 in spring 2009 , Salvio's first appearance in the Copa Sudamericana 2009 followed in August 2009 , where he was able to demonstrate his offensive quality in the first round first leg against CA River Plate and in the 2-1 success of his team scored both goals. After that, however, the team did not get past the round of 16 of the competition , in which they lost with a total score of 1: 5 against the strong Ecuadorian club LDU Quito . Salvio was used as a regular in all four Copa Sudamericana games; the two goals against River Plate should remain the only ones for him in the tournament.

Transfer to Atlético Madrid

After a rather mediocre opening in 2009, in which the team finished ninth in the sometimes very tightly staggered table at the end of the season, several internationally successful clubs again announced their interest in Salvio. In the European winter transfer period, the Spanish club Atlético Madrid finally won in January 2010 (also against Fiorentina ) and brought the offensive talent, often referred to by the media as the “Argentine child prodigy”, to the team for a rumored transfer fee of ten million euros .

Salvio made his competitive debut for the Spanish capital city club on February 18, 2010 in the Europa League sixteenth-final first leg against Galatasaray Istanbul (1-1), when he came on in the 86th minute for José Antonio Reyes .

After making a brief appearance in the second leg a week later, he also made his debut in Spain's top soccer league . He replaced the Portuguese international Simão on February 28, 2010 in the 4-1 home win over Valencia CF from the 84th minute . This was followed by further appearances in the league and in the Europa League (including against Sporting Lisbon , Valencia CF and Liverpool FC ), before Salvio scored the first goal for Madrid on April 25, 2010, with a 3-1 victory scored two goals over the CD Tenerife , making him a major contributor to the 3-1 success of his team. After a series of short appearances, this was also the first game for Atlético Madrid in which he was used over the entire game. While the great success in the league largely failed to materialize, the team made it to the final of the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League , where they had to play against Fulham .

In the game, which was played in front of around 49,000 spectators in the Volksparkstadion , the young Argentinean came on the lawn in the 78th minute for José Antonio Reyes and was then in action until the final whistle after more than 120 minutes. The game was decided in favor of the Spanish club by two goals from Diego Forlán . After playing the last league game of the 2009/10 season just three days later , Atlético Madrid only finished ninth in the final standings. Besides the success in the Europa League managed the team in the Copa del Rey 2009-10 , to the finals of the competition , where you but against the FC Sevilla 0: 2 lost; Salvio sat on the bench for the entire duration of the match without being used. While preparing for the season before the 2010/11 season still in the Madrid squad, Salvio's loan to Portugal to Benfica Lisbon followed on August 19 . Various other international clubs had previously announced their interest in loaning the offensive player, whose contract with Atlético Madrid ran until the summer of 2015.

After 13 league appearances and two league goals, Salvio tried his luck from August 2010 with a loan contract for one season with the Portuguese record champions Benfica Lisbon. There he did not have to wait long for his competitive debut and was used from the start on August 28, 2010 in the 3-0 home win over Vitória Setúbal and replaced by Ruben Amorim at half-time . After around a month of no action, Salvio came back to the team in another league game on September 25, 2010 and was also active in the UEFA Champions League for the first time just four days later . He was used in the group stage of the 2010/11 Champions League season in the first leg against FC Schalke 04 and was substituted for Pablo Aimar in the 62nd minute . After further league and Champions League appearances (including against FC Schalke 04, Olympique Lyon and Hapoel Tel Aviv ), the team did not make it beyond third place in their group at the end of the group phase. With this third place, the team was no longer entitled to participate in the Champions League, but was allowed to participate in the 2010/11 Europa League round of 32 , like all third parties. There, the team competed on February 17 and February 24, 2011 in a two-way leg against VfB Stuttgart . The first leg was won 2-1 after being 0-1 behind. In the second leg in Stuttgart Salvio scored that 1-0. The game ended 2-0, with Benfica progressing to the next round with an aggregate score of 4-1. The first goal for the Portuguese capital club in league play came on December 18, 2010, when he scored in the 62nd and 73rd minute of the game for his team in the 5-2 home win over Rio Ave FC ; the three remaining goals scored with Pablo Aimar and Javier Saviola two other compatriots Salvios. In his next competitive game on January 2, 2011, Salvio met again in a 2-0 win over Marítimo Funchal in the Taça da Liga .

After Salvio spent the 2011/12 season in Madrid again, he moved back to Benfica the following season.

National team career

Junior selections

Salvio gained his first international experience in the U-15 team of his home country before he was called up for the U-17 national team of Argentina at an advanced age . With this he took part in the Campeonato Sudamericano Sub-17 of 2007 , where he reached third place with the team. Because of this place, the team was automatically qualified for the U-17 World Cup in South Korea that same year . There Salvio was used as a regular on his team in all five games and was eliminated in the quarter-finals against later U-17 world champions Nigeria with 0-2 from the current competition. In total, he made 14 international matches and three goals by the end of his U-17 career. From 2008 Salvio was finally used in the junior team of his home country and took part with this, among other things, in the U-20 South American Championship 2009 , where the team, as already mentioned, did not make it past the last place in the final round. Salvio himself was the Argentinians' top scorer with four goals at this tournament. By the end of his junior career, the offensive player was used in nine U-20 international matches, in which he scored four goals.

A national team

After outstanding performances within the league as well as in the other national selections, Salvio was brought into the senior national team of Argentina in early May 2009 by then national coach Diego Maradona . He was used on May 20, 2009 in a 3-1 victory over Panama ; the Argentine team consisted exclusively of players from the Argentine Primera División and had no legionaries in their ranks. The young Argentine played another, albeit unofficial, international match on December 22, 2009 in a 2: 4 international defeat against the Catalan football team . Although he was first traded as a candidate for the Argentine squad at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , he has not been used in a single international match in Argentina to date (as of January 2011).
