Otto Berndt Hall
The Otto-Berndt-Halle is a multi-purpose building in Darmstadt .
The building was originally built in 1792 as a parade hall for the infantry regiment in Alexanderstraße. In 1925/1926 the Darmstadt architect Karl Roth converted it into a gymnasium and festival hall for the neighboring Technical University . To this end had Otto Berndt raised the necessary funds from private donors and industry. As a thank you, the gymnasium and festival hall was named Otto-Berndt-Halle when it was inaugurated on January 31, 1926.
The hall was largely destroyed in the air raids on Darmstadt during the Second World War in 1944. Only the outer walls and a few inner bearing walls have been preserved from the building. Under the planning of the architect Gerhard Bartels (architect) , the hall was rebuilt between 1950 and 1951 in the typical style of the early 1950s. Since then the hall of the TU Darmstadt has served as a cafeteria and event room. From 1952 onwards, u. a. the Darmstadt Talks take place.
The Otto-Berndt-Halle has been renovated several times, most recently in the years 2009 to 2011. It has been a listed building since 1986.
