Today's nunnery was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ ( Μεταμὁρφωσις Σωτήρου Metamorfósis Sotírou ). Currently (September 2016) 13 nuns live in the monastery.

Loukous Monastery, complete complex

In the Venetian period the monastery was temporarily owned by Capuchins . Since its partial destruction in 1826 by Ibrahim Pasha , the church no longer has a narthex .

Cross-domed church

The monastery was probably built on the ruins of the sanctuary of Polemocrates, a grandson of Asclepius . The walls of the cross-domed church are made of bricks; the cornices of the roofs and the angular apses as well as the windows are decorated by rows of tiles laid across corners. Ceramic plates are embedded in the gables and in the tambour . The spoils on the south wall come from the nearby villa of Herodes Atticus . Other spolia from the same site can be found on other buildings in the monastery. Inside, four pillars support the unusually high dome. The walls are decorated with well-preserved frescoes from the 17th century. Particularly noteworthy is the depiction of the hymn Akathistos . A floor mosaic and a richly carved iconostasis with valuable icons complete the equipment. Some of the frescoes were scratched and damaged in places by Ibrahim Pasha.
