The Hymnos Akathistos , actually Akathistos to the Most Holy Theotokos and everlasting Virgin Mary ( Greek O Ακάθιστος ύμνος ) is an early church praise of Mary from Constantinople and is considered the oldest and, along with the popular Marian hymn Agni Parthene, also the most beautiful Marian poem . The attribute a-káthistos means "not to sing while sitting" and emphasizes the excellence of this hymn in contrast to other hymns that are usually sung while sitting. The first and second parts of the Akathistos (stasis 1–2) are largely based on the Gospel of Luke and continue the English greeting of the Archangel Gabriel with an abundance of invocations to the Mother of God . The third and fourth parts of the Akathistos (stasis 3–4) meditate on the new creation miracle of the Incarnation from Mary and on the effects of this work through the ages. It has been sung mainly in the Eastern Church for over 1200 years .

The Akathistos to the Most Holy Theotokos and Everlasting Virgin Mary (Hymnos Akathistos) was sung for the first time in 626 in Constantinople during the siege of the city by the Avars, when Greek troops organized the defense of the city and the Patriarch of Constantinople in Hagia Sophia In front of the icon of Hodegetria, the Mother of God asked for protection and held a procession with the people singing the Akathistos to the Most Holy Theotokos. Various Byzantine and pagan traditions report the tremendous power of the Akathistus in repelling the attack. The text of the hymn was translated into Latin as early as 800 and influenced the mariological hymnography of the Latin church .

The Hymnos Akathistos in the Byzantine Eastern Church tradition

This hymn to Our Lady is one of the highest expressions of Marian piety in the Byzantine tradition. According to the words of the Byzantinist Louis Bréhier , "the Akáthistos to the Most Holy Theotokos is unique because of its elegant shape, the depth of the mystical feeling and the sonic beauty of his words". It is considered a literary and theological masterpiece that presents Mariology to all of Christianity in the form of a prayer. The sources that inspired poetry are the Scriptures , the doctrine formulated by the First Council of Nicaea , the doctrines of Ephesus and Chalcedon, and the reflection of the Oriental Fathers of the 4th and 5th centuries. It has been the custom for centuries to precede the chant of one of the four parts of the Akathistos of the Divine Liturgy on the first four Saturdays of Lent . Often the hearing of the Liturgy of the Hours is replaced by the hymn Akathistos. The Hymn Akathistos is also prayed on numerous other occasions in church or at home. Its use is recommended for promoting piety.

The Hymnos Akathistos in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church

In 1967 Eberhard Zumbroich (1933–2014) took a vow to translate this most important Byzantine grand hymn into German according to ancient Greek sources and to set it up for singing. As early as 1970, the Süddeutsche Rundfunk broadcast the work three times in response to popular requests. In the same year a sound recording with printed text was made, the 64th edition of which appeared in 2005. The worldwide success led in 1971 to the establishment of the "Sound Archive for the Byzantine Eastern Church Rite TABOR" and in 1978 to the foundation of the Transfiguration Chapel in Gaildorf, Württemberg. Structure and content

The Hymnos Akathistos consists of the Prooimion (introduction) and 24 Oikoi ("houses", stanzas, stanzas). In the original version, these 24 oikoi are in Greek in the alphabetical acrostic , that is, each initial letter of an oikoi corresponds to a letter of the Greek alphabet. Originally the oikoi were each introduced by seven lines and had the same meter. The odd oikoi (1, 3, 5 to 23) also contain twelve chairetisms each (χαι̃ρε chaire , "be greeted"). They are again divided into three quatrains with the same melody (or six couplets with the same meter). The introductions of the 24 oikoi are usually recited by the lead singer, the acclamations by the choir (or people). In recent times, the long old Kontakien mostly only used the Prooimien and the first Oikoi, and a change in meaning took place. Under Slavic influence, an oikos became an ikos and the word Kontakion often became a Kondakion . The Ikos now denotes the long stanza, the Condakion the short.

The first and second parts (stasis 1–2) tell salvation history largely based on the Gospel according to Luke ; the third and fourth parts are of a theological-dogmatic nature and praise the new creation that comes about through the incarnation and redemption. Each stasis can be prayed separately, it then ends with the closing prayer (contact 13).

Granting an indulgence

According to ecclesiastical rules, perfect indulgences are granted to those believers in Christ who reverently pray the Akathistos hymn in a church, public chapel, family or spiritual community, or at all, if several people come together for an honorable purpose; in other cases it is a partial indulgence. “To gain perfect indulgence, it is not necessary to say the entire Hymn of Akathistos; the uninterrupted prayer of some part is sufficient in accordance with legitimate custom. ”Up to now this indulgence was only granted to members of oriental rite churches. Now the Christians of the Roman Catholic Church can also win the associated indulgence.
