Michael Schneider (theologian)

Michael Schneider (born July 24, 1949 in Cologne ) is a German Jesuit priest and theologian ( dogmatics and liturgical science ).

Life

After graduating from high school , Michael Schneider first studied philosophy , later theology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , then at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , in Vienna and Freiburg im Breisgau .

In 1981 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the dogmatic interpretation of the Ignatian exercises (with E. Przywara, K. Rahner, G. Fessard) at the University of Vienna and entered the Jesuit order . From 1982 to 1984 he was chaplain in the parish of St. Albertus in Giessen . From 1984 to 2018, Schneider was Spiritual at the Sankt Georgen seminary in Frankfurt am Main , and from 1985 to 2000 he was also a lecturer in spiritual theology in the moral theology department at the University of Salzburg .

In 1991 he completed his habilitation at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg with a thesis on the theological interpretation of crises of faith and life and was since then until 2017 Professor of Dogmatics and Liturgical Science at the Philosophical-Theological University Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main . Since 1998 he has headed the Institute for the History of Dogmas and Liturgy and, from 2007, the Byzantine Seminar at the university. This seminar was terminated with Schneider's retirement in 2017; the first-mentioned institute has been continued under new management as the Alois-Kardinal-Grillmeier -Institute for the history of dogma, ecumenism and interreligious dialogue since 2018 .

At the beginning of the 2018/2019 academic year, Schneider was appointed spiritual at the seminary of the Eichstätt diocese .

Memberships

Michael Schneider has been on the board of the Patristic Center Koinonia-Oriens eV in Cologne since 1996. Schneider is also the national prior of the Patriarchal Order of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem in Germany, an association that reports to the Patriarch of Antioch of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church and helps set up kindergartens, old people's homes and hospices in the Middle East , especially in Syria , Jordan , Egypt and Israel supported.

Honors

The Patriarch of Antioch Gregorios III. Laham consecrated Michael Schneider on November 24, 2002 in the Frankfurt Cathedral as "Grand Archimandrite of the Patriarchate of Antioch". With this honorary title, Schneider is a representative of the Greek Catholic Church in Germany .
