The Kontakion (κοντάκιον, also κονδάκιον) describes one of the early forms of hymns in addition to the troparion and canon . In this structure with many stanzas, 20 to 40 stanzas with the same structure (the so-called οἶκοι, oikoi , houses) follow an initial stanza ( kubuklion or κουκούλιον, kukulion ). Following the example of Ephrem in the 4th century, these were mainly composed and sung by Sophronios of Jerusalem , Sergios of Byzantium and St. Romanos Melodos in the 6th century. The condakion stanza also follows the ikos .
