Thomas Rehdiger (also Thomas Rhediger and Redinger ) (born December 19, 1540 in Breslau ; † January 5, 1576 in Cologne ) from a Breslau patrician family was a Silesian humanist and book collector.

Life

Thomas Rehdiger was the son of the merchant Nicolaus Rehdiger , first mentioned in 1511 in Breslau.

Financially well endowed with his inheritance, he received excellent humanistic training. After attending the Elisabet Gymnasium , he studied law, theology and philosophy in Wittenberg, where he was also a student of Philipp Melanchthon . He was able to speak and write almost all of the classical languages. In May 1561 he returned from the Wittenberg University with excellent certificates.

He began his tour of France and the Netherlands in 1561, on the advice of Johann Crato von Krafftheim , accompanied by Hubert Languet . In Paris he made friends with the botanist Charles de l'Écluse (Carolus Clusius). In the same year they fled to Antwerp from the plague. In 1563 he traveled to France and in 1567 to Italy. In 1571 he went to Cologne.

He attended important libraries. His fortune enabled him to acquire numerous valuable books. His collection consisted of around 300 manuscripts and 6,000 printed works and came into the possession of the city of Wroclaw in 1645 through a contract with the descendants. When the parish libraries of St. Maria-Magdalena and St. Bernardin in Wroclaw were merged, this important collection, which was previously administered by the respective prorector of the Elisabet-Gymnasium, including the historiographer Karl Adolf Menzel , became an essential part of the local city library Bibliotheca Rehdigerana .
