Simon Schard

Simon Schard (* around 1535 in Neu-Haldensleben ; † May 26, 1573 in Speyer ; also Schardius ) was a lawyer, bibliophile, member of the Imperial Chamber of Commerce in Speyer and also made a name for himself as a historian.

Life

Simon Schard's father, Joachim Schard, was the chaplain and adjunct of his brother-in-law, the Lutheran pastor Thomas Moller. His brother was also named Joachim.

In 1549 Schard began his studies in Leipzig . In the winter of 1560 he traveled to Italy, where he stayed in Padua and Rome and published the source work of Eustathios . In 1561 Schard stayed in Basel and published the work De varia temporum in jure civil observatione Eusthatii olim Constantinopolitani antecessoris Libellus , dedicated to the Augsburg mayor Paul Hainzel . A few years later he became the councilor of Duke Wolfgang von Zweibrücken (1532–1569) and through this came into closer contact with political figures and scholars such as Crato von Krafftheim and Thomas Rehdiger .

In 1565 Simon Schard was matriculated in Basel. It is unknown whether he obtained his doctorate there. In the summer of 1566 Schard went to Speyer, where he became a member of the Imperial Chamber Court in October.

In addition, he continued his studies and collections on contemporary history. One of his main works was Scriptores rerum Germanicarum .
