His brother was Johann Baptist Hainzel . Both studied in Basel , Tübingen and Wittenberg , 1545–1549 in Italy .

He was a friend of Tycho Brahe . At the beginning of 1570, Brahe designed the largest sky observation device in Europe at the time, the Augsburg Quadrant , which was destroyed by a storm in December 1574 at Hainzel's Gögginger Gartengut (partly the former Graf-von-Seysselsche Park) . With the quadrant, Hainzel was able to determine the latitude of his location to 48 degrees and 22 arc minutes in 1572, about two kilometers from the actual value.

The moon crater Hainzel was named after Hainzel .
