Hainzel is one of three overlapping lunar craters . The group is located in the south-western sector of the moon, on the western side of the Lacus Timoris , which is also known as the "Sea of Fear". On the south-western side of the crater rim is the Mee crater , the crater rim of which forms a ridge emanating from the Hainzel formation and running in a southerly direction.

Hainzel is the southern of the three craters, it is overlapped by Hainzel 'C' in the northeast and 'Hainzel' A 'in the north. The most intact and youngest of the three craters is Hainzel 'A'. The crater rim between Hainzel and Hainzel 'C' is in very good condition and forms a promontory in the area of the southeastern crater rim.

The Hainzel craters were named after the Augsburg patrician Paul Hainzel. In the second half of the 16th century, Hainzel supported the astronomer Tycho Brahe in building the first large-scale precision instrument in recent astronomical history, a quadrant made of wood . He allowed Brahe to build the quadrant, which had a radius of 19 feet (about 5.5 meters), in the garden of her Augsburg estate. With this instrument, the zenith distance and position of stars could be measured precisely. The accuracy of the quarter circle made of brass was 10 arc seconds. However, Brahe never made any measurements himself with the quadrant. At the time of completion, he had already left Augsburg for a long time.
