Louis Pilot (born November 11, 1940 in Esch an der Alzette , † April 16, 2016 in Niederanven ) was a Luxembourg football player and coach . The striker is considered one of the most important Luxembourg football players to date.
Player career
As a 19-year-old Pilot moved from his home club CS Fola Esch / Alzette to Belgium to Standard Liège . With Standard he won the Belgian championship four times and the national cup twice . When the team failed in the semi-finals of the European Cup against Real Madrid in 1962 , Pilot was not yet part of the regular formation. When the team from Stade de Sclessin was able to move into a semi-final in the 1966/67 European Cup Winners' Cup , he had long been one of the regulars in the team of coach Milorad Pavić . FC Bayern Munich prevailed in April 1967 with two wins against Standard. In the following year, the three games in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1967/68 against AC Milan stood out. The team around Karl-Heinz Schnellinger and Gianni Rivera only prevailed in the play -off . Pilot was also active in midfield for Liège in the 1969/70 European Cup against Real Madrid (1: 0; 3: 2) and Leeds United (0: 1; 0: 1). In his last round he showed with Standard Liège in the games in the quarter-finals of the European Cup 1971/72 again a remarkable performance in the encounters against Inter Milan (0: 1; 2: 1).
Outstanding teammates were by his side experts like Roger Claessen , Léon Semmeling , Jean Nicolay , Léon Jeck , Wilfried van Moer and Erwin Kostedde .
After he left Standard in 1970, he played for Royal Antwerp and Racing Jet in the following years , before ending his playing career in 1978.
For the Luxembourg national team , Pilot played a total of 49 international matches between 1959 and 1971, in which he scored seven goals. He was part of the "big" Luxembourg team that reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship in 1964 and only failed there in a playoff against Denmark . In the round of 16 they had won the second leg on October 30, 1963 in Rotterdam 2-1 in front of 42,000 spectators against the Netherlands. In the quarter-finals, Denmark defied a 3-3 draw at home on December 4, 1963, before a 2-2 draw in Copenhagen in front of 39,400 spectators a week later. The decider decided the Danish striker Ole Madsen with a goal to the 1-0 victory for the Danes. Pilot made his national team debut on his 19th birthday and ended his international career on May 26, 1977 after 17 years and 6 months.
He was footballer of the year in Luxembourg in 1966, 1970, 1971 and 1972 .
Further career
From 1978 to 1984 pilot trained the Luxembourg national team. He then took over “his” club, Standard Liège, which he only coached for a year. He then only coached the Luxembourg first division clubs Etzella Ettelbrück and Avenir Beggen before retiring from football.
In 2004, on the 50th anniversary of UEFA, he was elected Luxembourg's “ Golden Player ”, the most important Luxembourg player of the past 50 years.
