history

1915 to 1945

July 1, 1915 is considered to be the founding date of the Beggen football club. The original name was Etoile Sportive , but since a club with this name already existed in Luxembourg, the name was changed to Avenir (German: future) Beggen. In the same year one joined the Luxembourg football association FLF. In 1918 one could celebrate a first success with promotion to the 2nd division (3rd division). After being relegated from the same league in 1923, the following seasons began to take off for a short time: The direct resurgence was followed in 1926 by promotion to promotion , which was the second highest division in the country at the time. But after only one year they had to say goodbye to this after losing a relegation game against CS Pétange . It was not until 1931 that they returned to the second highest division, but could only hold out again for a year. Relegation was followed by promotion the following season, and after the Stade Emile Metz-Tesch was completed in 1937 , promotion to the Ehrendivision, the top division of Luxembourg, was achieved for the first time in the 1937/38 season. The first season in the top division was extremely unfortunate: With just four wins and one draw from 18 games, Avenir Beggen was relegated bottom of the table with 32:79 goals.

During the Second World War under the German occupation, Beggen played under the name SV 1915 Beggen in a lower league from 1940 to 1944 after the Luxembourg clubs were forcibly integrated into the German Gauliga system by the National Socialists.

1945 to 1968

Immediately after the end of the German occupation, it was renamed FC Avenir Beggen . In 1945/46 the club started in the 1st division in the first regular post-war season. In 1946 and 1950 Beggen was able to set two smaller exclamation marks by reaching the semi-finals in the Coupe de Luxembourg (Luxembourg cup competition). In 1948 they were relegated to the third division, in which they remained until the 1957/58 season, at the end of which they were relegated to the fourth division. By 1962, however, a rapid rise was to take place: After the resurgence in 1959, they managed to march straight through to the second division. And after only two seasons in the second division, they were back in the first division after 23 years . You only had to suffer a direct setback once more: in 1964 you were only second class for one season, but you were able to qualify directly for the first division again. In the following years you could establish yourself in the top division, which should be followed by great success.

1969 to 1994

After a seventh place in the 1967/68 season, the first championship followed the following year. Equal on points with Jeunesse Esch , they became Luxembourg champions due to the better goal difference (+38 to +30) and at the same time Beggen qualified for a European competition for the first time. When they first took part in the European Cup , they met the top Italian club AC Milan , last year's winner. Although they lost 5-0 in front of 50,000 spectators in Milan and the second leg didn't go much better with a 3-0 defeat, these results were extremely respectable against these opponents.

The next highlight in the club's history was in 1974 reaching the cup final for the first time. Although they lost it against Jeunesse Esch 1: 4, in Beggen they could still look forward to their first participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup , as Esch also won the championship. After the Cypriot representative Paralymni Famagusta had withdrawn in the first round , they met FK Red Star Belgrade in the second round . In the two games against the Yugoslav club they scored goals in an international competition for the first time, but they conceded 11 and were eliminated again without a chance. Again just one year later (1975/76) the club also celebrated its premiere for the UEFA Cup . In addition, they lost 0:10 against FC Porto .

For the next six years, Avenir Beggen played mostly in the lower regions of the league, only in the 1981/82 season they could make a name for themselves again. In August 1981 the new Stade de Beggen stadium was inaugurated and at the same time, after 1969, it was possible to become Luxembourg champions for the second time. This also authorized the club to participate in the national championship cup again. With Rapid Wien , however, they met a team that was better than Beggen by a class and against whom they were eliminated with 0: 5 and 0: 8. In addition to the runner-up, you could win the cup for the first time in the 1982/83 season (4-2 against Union Luxembourg ).

The 1983/84 season was to be the most successful season in the club's history to date. With the win of the double (championship and cup) one underlined the achievements in the previous years impressively. Although they were eliminated from international competition as in previous years (1: 9 against Servette Geneva ), the triumph in the league made them one of the major Luxembourg clubs.

Even the years after that should not remain without success. In 1986 they became Luxembourg champions for the fourth time and only a year later they won their third cup in just five years.

Until 1992 you could only reach the final of the Cup twice (1988 and 1989), but lost both times. With the cup victory in 1992 they were once again qualified for a European competition for the 1992/93 season. For the first time you should be able to assert yourself against a team: Against the Faroese representative B36 Tórshavn they won the first leg 1-0 and were able to reach the first main round by 1-1 in the second leg. There the Luxembourgers even managed a 0-0 home win against Spartak Moscow , only the 5-1 defeat in Russia stopped Avenir. In the league it was also excellent for Beggen. After 1984 they won the championship and cup for the second time, a success that could even be repeated again in the 1993/94 season. In the league in 1994 they were ahead of champions with 4.5 points (half points due to the transfer of halved points from the season in the play-off round), in the cup final they beat F91 Dudelange as in the previous season . This was the third time in a row that Avenir Beggen won the cup, a feat that Red Boys Differdange had only achieved twice in the early years of the cup competition.

1995 to 2013

Avenir Beggen's squad at the start of the 2005/06 season

With the 1994/95 season, the team's slow athletic decline began. With a place in the upper part of the table, they qualified for the UEFA Cup for the penultimate time, where they could survive a round for the last time. Against the Swedish representative Örebro SK they played 0-0 away and 1-1 at home. Although you would have been eliminated by the away goals rule , you reached the next round. The Swedes had one foreign player too many in the second leg, so the game was subsequently rated 3-0 for Beggen. In the next round there were two clear defeats against RC Lens (0: 6 and 0: 7), until the 2002/03 season this was the last international appearance.

After reaching the cup final in 1998 and a play-off participation in 2000, the club is only in a relegation battle in the new millennium. The last ray of hope was the seventh cup success in the 2001/02 season. With a 1-0 win over F91 Dudelange , they qualified for the UEFA Cup for the last time (9-1 against Ipswich Town )

In the 2005/06 season, the club rose after 41 years of first class in the second division. In the decisive play-off game they lost 3-2 to FC Mondercange after extra time, all the more tragic when they were apparently still in the lead with 2-0 up to the 92nd minute. However, the association, which was still threatened a few years ago, has now paid its debts of 250,000 euros and is under management for the first time since the resignation of Théo Mersch, the long-standing president of the association, in 2001, out of the leadership crisis of the new strong president, Jean Hansen and his team.

In the 2006/07 season, the not necessarily expected direct resurgence, which was already established on the third last match day. The 2007/2008 season ended the FC Avenir in 5th place in the table. In the 2008/09 season they finished 14th and last place in the national division after a disappointing year and went back to the honorary doctorate . 2010/11 followed the next descent, with which the club only played third class in the 1st division. For the first two years in the 1st division, Beggen played in the southern district, the so-called "2nd district". From 2013 Beggen played in the northern district of the 1st division.

2013 until today

From July 13, 2013, the FC Avenir Beggen was taken over by the entrepreneur Damien Raths with the aim of building on the great successes of the past. His predecessor Jean Hansen had to resign for health reasons and was appointed honorary president of the association.

The 2013/2014 season ended with FC Avenir in third place in the table. In the 2014/15 season they managed to get promoted to the honorary doctorate with second place in the table. Succeeded at the end of the season 2015/16 as 11 with a 4: 1 victory in Barragespiel against Alisontia Steinsel still avoiding relegation, Beggen increased in the following season as a severed Table with just one win and three draws from 26 games back in the 1 Division off. Only a year later, as bottom of the table with 19 points, the descent to the fourth-class 2nd division followed. At the end of the 2018/19 season, he was immediately promoted again. The club is trained after the relegation of Niki Wagner .
