Philipp Wilhelm Prozell

Philipp Wilhelm Prozell (born April 10, 1792 in Detzel (Haldensleben) , † January 19, 1888 in Friedland (Mecklenburg) ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and honorary meteorologist .

Life

Philipp Wilhelm Prozell was a son of the bailiff Friedrich Georg Prozell († 1820). He attended school in Berge monastery and the cathedral high school in Magdeburg . From 1811 to 1813 he studied Protestant theology at the University of Berlin.

In 1818 he was the first teacher at the elementary school in Neustrelitz . From 1821 he was also a cantor. In 1825 he became the first teacher at the newly founded Neustrelitz secondary school . He also gave private lessons to the Duchess Caroline zu Mecklenburg .

In 1834 he went to Hinrichshagen (now part of Woldegk ) as a pastor , where he worked for over 40 years. On May 24, 1865, the Grand Duke appointed him preposition for the Woldegk Synod. For his 50th anniversary in school and church service, he received the title of Councilor in 1868 . After his retirement in 1876, he moved to Friedland.

Weather observations

Since 1848, Prozell has been observing with precisely regulated instruments and in accordance with the Prussian meteorological stations suggested by Alexander von Humboldt and founded by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove . He was the first to lay the foundation for scientific meteorology in Mecklenburg.

His weather station in Hinrichshagen and another in Rostock were included in the weather observation network of the Prussian Meteorological Institute, one of the forerunners of the German Meteorological Service .

He published his Meteorological Observations on Hinrichshagen regularly from 1849 to 1854 in the archive of the Association of Friends of Natural History in Mecklenburg .

After his retirement, he initially continued his observations in Friedland. In 1880 he left the group of weather observers. The weather station was relocated to Neustrelitz and continued to be operated by the local high school professor Adolf Gustav Kurtze (1816–1896).

On April 15, 2018, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the Hinrichshagen church.
