Dirk Marcellis (born April 13, 1988 in Horst aan de Maas ) is a former Dutch football player .
Career
society
Marcellis played in the youth team of PSV in Eindhoven from 1998 . His first football club was RKSV Wittenhorst and he played in the youth of VVV-Venlo before he went to PSV.
Since the 2006/07 season, the central defender has been part of the Red-Whites' professional squad . On April 11, 2007 he made his debut in the first team of PSV in the UEFA Champions League game against Liverpool . In the same game he received a red card and thus had a rather unfortunate start to his professional career. Almost six months later, on October 6th, he celebrated his first game in the Eredivisie against Willem II Tilburg . Thanks to good performance, he continued to develop in his second year and was able to work regularly. In the 2007/08 season he completed 26 games. This was rewarded with a contract extension until 2012. In the same year he won his first title with PSV. The championship was won last year, but Marcellis has not played a game during this time. In 2008 he was voted third among the best players of the 2007/08 season by PSV fans behind Heurelho da Silva Gomes and Ibrahim Afellay . At the beginning of the 2009/10 season he missed a few games due to an injury, was then no longer first choice under coach Fred Rutten and only came to eleven Eredivisie missions. For the 2010/11 season , he therefore left his home club and moved to AZ.
National team
For the 2008 Summer Olympics he was appointed to the national team. On October 11, 2008, the 20-year-old made his debut in the senior national team in the World Cup qualifier against Iceland under coach Bert van Marwijk .
