Engelbert (Ebrach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Engelbert († after 1236) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1220 until his resignation in 1236 .

Life

Almost nothing is known about the life of Abbot Engelbert. He was probably born in the Franconian region in the 12th century. The parents of the future abbot are unknown, and the sources are silent about any siblings. The prelate's predecessor , Eberhard , resigned to the abbey in 1219 and the monks elected Engelbert as his successor in 1220. Engelbert became the eighth abbot of the Steigerwald monastery and soon began to increase the estates.

In 1225, for example, a donation from Count Rupert II zu Castell has come down to us, in which he transferred the Kaltenhausen estate to the monastery on the ferry near Fahr am Main. The abbot later acquired several properties in Unterspiesheim. Emperor Friedrich II also donated the Schwabach parish in what is now Central Franconia, which was equipped with some goods, to the abbey. Abbot Engelbert resigned in 1236 and later died in an unknown location.
