The World Pool-Billiard Association ( WPA for short ) is the world association for all areas of pool-billiards . The association, founded in 1987, is subordinate to the World Confederation of Billiard Sports , the umbrella organization for all areas of billiards .
The WPA issues official regulations and organizes various world championships. The longest tradition of this is the 9-ball World Cup , which has been held annually since 1990.
history
After many European players were dissatisfied with the development of pool billiards in Europe and with the fact that there were no higher-class tournaments on their continent, especially in comparison to the USA, a world championship was held for the first time in 1976 in Japan by the European association EPBF in cooperation with Asian associations , where the first contacts to Asia were made.
In November 1987, at a board meeting of the EPBF in Germany, the idea of a global competition came up again. Financed by the board members, the association was founded, a logo was created and contact was made with various pool organizations. The Japanese Kazuo Fujima then announced Asia's interest in membership. In 1988 the Asian Pocket Billiard Union was founded and a member of the WPA. As part of the European Championship in 1988 in the Swedish capital Stockholm , a general assembly of the WPA took place, at which Kazuo Fujima (Japan), Paul Gerni (USA), Jorgen Sandman (Sweden) and Horst Vondenhoff (Germany) were elected to the board.
In the summer of 1989, the planning of a 9-ball world championship began. After initial doubts about the quality of the tournament and the European and Asian players, the Billiard Congress of America finally agreed to participate in the World Cup. In 1990 the BCA became a member of the WPA. In March 1990, the 9-Ball World Cup in Bergheim was held for the first time with 32 players and 16 players and was won by the Americans Earl Strickland and Robin Bell . At the general assembly taking place during the World Cup, the WPA was officially recognized by its members as a world association.
In the following years the number of members increased steadily. 1991, Australia and New Zealand members of the WPA, 1999, the Latin American Billiard Association CPB member and since 2000 a number of African associations.
