List of hiking trails in Portugal
In Portugal there are a large number of hiking trails in all regions of the country and its island regions Madeira and the Azores .
Above all, the long-distance hiking trails, the GR ( Grande Rota , German: Great Route) are known nationwide . In addition to the long-distance hiking trails, there are a large number of shorter, partly themed hiking trails, which are designated with PR ( Pequena Rota , German: small route) and which are less than 30 km long or do not exceed a day's hike. They are all qualified and registered by the Federação de Campismo e Montanhismo de Portugal (FCMP), the national umbrella organization. In addition to their simple numbering, they also have a thematically and spatially meaningful name.
In addition to PR, there is local PL ( Pedestres Locais , German for example: local footpaths), a category created in 2006 for paths that lead completely or predominantly through one or neighboring localities, i.e. are meant as local tours. These are not numbered by the FCMP and are therefore not listed here.

Madeira
In the autonomous region of Madeira , the hiking trails are numbered without an abbreviation for circles, and on the main island of Madeira without an island abbreviation. On the island of Porto Santo only two hiking trails are certified by the FCMP. To distinguish it from the routes on Madeira, the numbering is preceded by the abbreviation PS.
Since the short hiking trails (PR) in continental Portugal are led with circle abbreviations and in the Azores with island abbreviations, the hiking trails in Madeira can be registered with the FCMP without abbreviations. This means that every Portuguese hiking trail is clearly identified with its FCMP numbering.
