history

The order of knights of Avis built a castle here in 1298 , at the behest of King D. Dinis . The village that emerged as a result was named Alandroal, probably going back to a local oleander garden ( Portuguese : Alandroal) of the friars of Avis. The place received the town charter ( Foral ) in 1486 from King D. João II. King D. Manuel I renewed the town charter in 1514 in the course of his administrative reforms.

The place suffered some damage during the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 . As a result, a number of buildings were rebuilt, including the town hall.
