history

Finds prove a settlement since the Copper Age , and the Romans also settled here. Today's place was created during the resettlement after the Reconquista . Terena received its first town charter in 1262 from King D.Afonso III. , which King Manuel I renewed as part of his administrative reforms in 1514 .

In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the Terene district was dissolved in the mid-19th century and Alandroal was incorporated.

Culture and sights

The archaeological site of Castro de Castelo Velho goes back to the Copper Age through the Castro culture . Traces of Roman settlement and remains of an early Christian basilica can be seen at the Povoado fortificado e Santuário de Endovélico excavations .

Other architectural monuments are fortifications, the historic town hall and various sacred buildings , including the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Terena (also Igreja de São Pedro ) , which dates back to a church built before 1394 and was newly built in the 16th century .

The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.
