Reguengos de Monsaraz is a Portuguese city ( Cidade ) in the Alentejo region . The district town is particularly known for its wines and the eponymous historical town of Monsaraz.
history
Megalithic systems and other finds prove a prehistoric settlement, such as the Menhir da Bulhoa or the Menhir do Outeiro . The Xerez Cromlech has not been preserved in its original state and was last relocated in connection with the construction work on the Alqueva reservoir . The Antas of Poço da Gateira, on the other hand, are of some importance.
Monsaraz, an Arab town since 711 , was conquered by Geraldo Sem Pavor during the Reconquista . In 1276 Monsaraz received its first town charter. The district of Reguengos de Monsaraz was only created in 1838, when the previous district seat changed from Monsaraz here. Reguengo was an earlier name for an administrative district that was directly taxable to the king. Reguengos de Monsaraz was elevated to Vila (small town with administrative rights) in 1840 .
Since 2004 Reguengos de Monsaraz is a city ( Cidade ).
Sports
The football club Atlético SC Reguengos , founded in 1929, plays its home games in Campo Virgilio Durão, which has 1,000 seats . The club rose after the 2008/2009 season in the II. Divisão , today's Campeonato Nacional de Seniores (Third League). After relegation and the reorganization of the third and fourth national divisions in the newly created third division, Atlético SC is now playing in the top division of the district association for promotion. (Status: 2013/14 season)
The club's basketball department is also of regional importance.
