Borba is a city ( Cidade ) in the Alentejo in Portugal . Borba is a wine town and is located on the Alentejo Wine Route. Excellent wines are produced here, which have been exported abroad for years.
history
The origin of the place is probably in a first Celtiberian settlement. After it became a place of the Roman province of Lusitania and then belonged to the Visigoth Empire , Borba came under the rule of the Moors in the course of the Arab conquest in 711 .
During the Reconquista , the Portuguese King D.Afonso II conquered the place in 1217 . King D Dinis created the independent district of Borba in 1302 and gave it its first town charter , which King D Manuel I renewed on June 1, 1512 .
After Borba, which is close to the border, was the scene of several battles to secure the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal during the revolution from 1383 , the place was involved in acts of war several times in the course of further history. In the summer of 1662, during the War of Restoration , the Habsburg-Spanish general Juan de Austria captured Borba and hanged a number of soldiers and officers here, including the garrison commander Rodrigo da Cunha Ferreira. In addition, he had the town hall and the city registers set on fire, so that today all historical manuscripts of the city's history are lost. In 1665 , Borba was again the scene of destruction, with the battle called Batalha de Montes Claros on June 17th near Montes Claros, municipality of Rio de Moinhos . A memorial stone reminds of the date today. In 1711 , Borba experienced a new occupation when the Spanish general Domingos de Ceo took the place and imposed high war taxes on it. The place was also destroyed during the Napoleonic invasions , in connection with the defensive battles of Évora on June 29, 1808 . From 1808 to 1811 , a Scottish brigade of the British-Portuguese Defense Army under General Beresford was stationed in Borba .
With the arrival of the railway in 1905 and the increased importance of marble quarrying in the 20th century, the place experienced a relative boom. Borba was promoted to city ( Cidade ) on June 12, 2009 .
On the afternoon of November 19, 2018, a landslide occurred in the area of the marble quarries on National Road 255. The road slipped completely over a length of 200 meters and tore down a construction machine and two cars. Several people were killed.
