history

Renovated railway line near Évora
Évora train station

The Linha de Évora, opened in 1863, today connects the Portuguese district capital Évora with Casa Branca . After the opening, further sections followed between 1873 and 1905, which reached to Vila Viçosa , as well as a connecting line to Mora ( Ramal de Mora ) for the transport of agricultural goods. The latter was shut down in 1988, as was the section Ramal de Vila Viçosa , from Estremoz to Vila Viçosa of the Linha de Évora. In Estremoz there is a cross connection to Linha do Leste , connection to Portalegre .

In February 2006 the single-track railway line was completely renovated. Originally planned for five months, the renovation lasted eight months until the end of September 2006. After that, the operating company Comboios de Portugal also set up intercity connections between Évora and the Portuguese capital Lisbon for the first time. At the end of 2009, the route was closed again for a year in order to electrify it for 48.4 million euros. The section to Évora was reopened in July 2011, and there is now an intercity connection to Lisbon four times a day. The section from Évora to Estremoz, which has not been used since 2009, was shut down at the same time.
