São Bento do Ameixial is a Portuguese place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Estremoz with 334 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of São Bento do Ameixial and Santa Vitória do Ameixial were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias do Ameixial (Santa Vitória e São Bento) .
history
São Bento do Ameixial was first mentioned in 1258 . Until the 16th century it was part of the municipality of Santa Maria (Estremoz) and was called São Bento da Aldeia do Penedo. Since then it has been an independent municipality in the Estremoz district.

traffic
The national road N4 leads to the nearby district town Estremoz and its connection to the A6 motorway . The county road to Estremoz also leads to the national road N245 to Sousel .
The local public transport is served by a line from Rodoviária do Alentejo , a company of the Barraqueiro Group. In the morning the bus goes here once in the direction of Estremoz, and once in the evening in the opposite direction. On Wednesdays and Fridays there is also a bus from Estremoz to São Bento do Ameixial for lunch.
