History and sights

The place name Santa Vitória do Ameixial ( Portuguese for: Holy Victory of Plum Grove) goes back to a historical event in the local plain of Ameixial (English: Plum Grove). In 1663 , one of the decisive battles in the Restoration War was fought here . Portuguese armed forces fought back the Habsburg invasion armies under João de Áustria . This was a crucial step in maintaining Portugal's newly gained independence from Spain.

A memorial for this event was erected here shortly afterwards. Today it is a listed building.

A villa rustica from the time of the Roman occupation was also excavated in the community. The archaeological site of Villa lusitano-romana de Santa Vitória do Ameixial can be visited.
