Tibor Erdey-Grúz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tibor Erdey-Grúz (born October 27, 1902 in Budapest ; † August 16, 1976 there ) was a Hungarian physical chemist and politician who served as the Hungarian Minister of Education from 1953 to 1956.

Life

Erdey-Grúz studied in Budapest, where he received his doctorate in 1924. He then worked in Berlin and Munich, where he worked with Kasimir Fajans .

In the People's Republic of Hungary he was Minister for Higher Education from 1952 under the Stalinist Prime Minister Mátyás Rákosi , from July 4, 1953 Minister of Education in the reform phase under Nagy and in the restalinization phase under András Hegedüs until July 30, 1956. He belonged to the Communist Party of the Hungarian Working people (MDP).

Since 1962 he was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and an external member since 1969 . In 1966 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR .

Create

Erdey-Grúz worked as a visiting scientist with Max Volmer . Together they deduced a relationship between overvoltage and current density that is now known as the Butler-Volmer equation , although the equation would more accurately be called the Erdey-Grúz-Volmer-Butler equation, but that name would arguably be too long for general use. It was therefore suggested that the equation should be called the "Erdey-Grúz-Volmer equation" instead, also because the significance of Butler's contribution to the derivation of the equation had been questioned - but these doubts have now been dispelled.

Erdey-Grúz wrote several textbooks, mainly on physical chemistry, but also on catalysis and corrosion. He was President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from February 1970 until his death in 1976 .
