Henrique Nunes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henrique Nunes , also Firme-Fé , (* in the second half of the 15th century in Borba , † July 1524 near Valverde ( province of Badajoz )) was a native Jew who was in the service of Dom João III. Spied Judaizing Marranos .

Life

Henrique Nunes was born as a Portuguese Jew in Borba in the Alentejo . From there he went to Castile , where he was probably baptized. As a new Christian he entered the service of the Spanish Inquisitor of Cordoba Diego Rodrigues Lucero. With Lucero, who was also of Jewish origin, Nunes connected his hatred of Judaizing new Christians.

His dubious reputation seems to have reached the court of the Portuguese king. Nunes was hired to help João III. to support him in his efforts to introduce the Inquisition. The king received him for a private audience and commissioned him to go to Santarém and Lisbon as an alleged fellow believer in the houses of new Christians in order to convict them of Judaizing . When the court went to Évora , Nunes continued his espionage activities there too. He went to Olivença , where his informal work was exposed by the local Marranos.

Two new Christians dressed as monks , Andreas Diaz and Diego Vaz, attacked Nunes near Valverde (Badajoz) and killed him in July 1524. The two murderers were caught, tried and, after torture, executed. The Marranenspitzel Nunes was named Firme-Fé , the strong believer, and was at times venerated as a Christian martyr .
