Montemor-o-Novo is a city in the Alentejo region of Portugal . The city is located about 80 km east of the capital Lisbon and about 30 km west of the Unesco city of Évora . To the southwest lies the Serra de Monfurado nature reserve . The church holiday is celebrated on March 8, according to John of God .

history

Stone Age traces can be found in the nearby Anta da Chaminé .

Montemor-o-Novo managed to maintain administrative rights ( "foral") for the first time by King Sancho I in 1203 , renewed in 1503 in the management of renewals by I. King Manuel Sancho called by the Moors conquered city Montemor-o-Novo as opposed to the more northerly Montemor, now called Montemor-o-Velho .

The city resisted the French invasion forces under Andoche Junot in 1808 . In 1834 it housed the army command of the troops of Saldanha in the Miguelistenkrieg , and after the Carnation Revolution of 1974 the new regulations for community democratization ( Poder Local Democrático ) and land reform were implemented here more smoothly than in other localities, especially in the north of the country. Montemor-o-Novo received its town charter in 1988 .
