José Benigno de Almeida Faria (born May 4, 1943 in Montemor-o-Novo ) is a Portuguese writer. He is one of the main representatives of contemporary literary realism in Portugal and, above all, very important as a novelist .

Life

The narrative gifted young man published his first novel at the age of 19. He studied law and literature and then took his exams as a philosopher. Almeida Faria is now professor of aesthetics and philosophy at the Universidade Nova in Lisbon . In 1968 and 1969 he was a guest author in Iowa City (USA) and in West Berlin (Writer in Residence).

As a man of letters he is versatile. He is a novelist, narrator, translator (including a book of poems by Hans Magnus Enzensberger 1979) and essayist. He has published in various foreign and literary magazines, such as German, Brazilian, French, Dutch, Italian, Swedish, US and Portuguese magazines. He was also one of the first presidents of the PEN club in Portugal.

His books have been translated into German, Spanish, French, Dutch, Swedish, Italian and Hungarian.

Curt Meyer-Clason translated the book Passionstag , which was published in 1968 by S. Fischer Verlag. In 1980 fragments of a biography were translated in West Berlin during a literary colloquium .
