colloquium
A colloquium , sometimes also written colloquium (from the Latin colloquium " conversation ", " conversation ") is mostly understood today in its meaning as a scientific conversation. In the academic field today it usually means a professional exchange of ideas without a fixed form, in contrast to a seminar .
At universities, however, a colloquium can also have the character of an accountability - for example, when "colloquizing" an exercise material or the literature used.
Definition of terms
The general term is used in various fields, especially for university and scientific meetings .
Educational area
In the field of education, the following exams and final events are called colloquiums:
- Oral examination in the Abitur (presentation examination / special learning achievement)
- Oral compulsory defense of a thesis to obtain the Abitur on the second educational path in Berlin
- Oral compulsory defense of a thesis to obtain a Bachelor or Master degree
- PhD exam
- last oral exam in the internship / year of recognition at a university of applied sciences for social education. (Training as a state-recognized social worker / social pedagogue)
- Oral test in the style of a conversation (question-answer) between professor or laboratory engineer and student (e.g. as an entrance test for an internship to check whether the student is prepared or as an (oral) test during or at the end of an internship )
- written review as part of an exercise at universities in Austria
- as a completion of the professional qualification internship in social professions (e.g .: educators, child carers, curative educators). After the year of recognition you meet for a colloquium and then receive state recognition. (e.g. state-approved educator, etc.)
- Form of the oral examination for the habilitation , with which the official right to teach at a college or university is acquired
The following examinations and final events are alternatively named colloquium:
- Diploma defense or defense of the bachelor's or master's thesis rsp.
- Defense of the seminar paper or BeLL , which in some federal states (e.g. Thuringia and Baden-Württemberg) is part of the Abitur .
In general
In addition, regular meetings of diploma or doctoral students , but also of Bachelor and Master candidates, are called colloquiums at universities . There, the participants can present their current research work and discuss it among an expert audience.
In order to honor deserving scientists, universities or their faculties also hold festive colloquia . External guests are then usually invited.
In the past, the Latin speech exercises in particular were called Colloquia , which were sometimes also published. Famous are Colloquia of Erasmus .
At the time of the Reformation , the religious discussions of the warring parties were sometimes called Colloquia (charitativa) . Later, the colloquium was understood to mean the scholarly discussion with superiors, which took the place of the examination, to which Northern German Protestant clergy had to undergo if they were to be promoted or wanted to transfer to another regional church .
In the context of student associations , colloquium refers to the part of bars or commers that is dedicated to informal conversation between the participants. During the speeches and ceremonies there is “Silentium” (calm), in between “Colloquium” (conversation).
