Graduate student

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A graduate student is a person who is writing a thesis and is about to complete a degree . This period begins with the admission to the diploma procedure by the responsible examination office of a university or professional academy and usually ends with the assessment of the work by the supervisor or examiners and a diploma examination.

The academic degrees awarded after taking a diploma examination ( colloquium ) are e.g. B. Graduate engineer (abbr. Dipl.-Ing.), Graduate computer scientist (abbr. Dipl.-Inf. Or Dipl.-Inform.), Graduate physicist (abbr. Dipl.-Phys.) Or graduate industrial engineer (Abbreviation Dipl.-Wirt.-Ing.). But also other degrees such as B. Diplom-Päd. (Abbr. Dipl.-Päd.) Or Diplom-Psychologist (Abb. Dipl.-Psych.) Are possible. Diploma degrees must have the addition (FH) if they were awarded by a university of applied sciences. In individual federal states, a similar degree with the addition (BA) can also be obtained at a vocational academy . The corresponding ceremonial awarding of the degree is referred to in Austria as a graduation .

With the implementation of the Bologna Process , the academic diploma degree was dropped at many universities and was replaced by the Bachelor or Master . In the absence of a clear regulation, the author of the master's thesis is sometimes referred to as a “ master's student ” or “diploma student”. The term " Bachelorand " is occasionally used for the Bachelor's degree .
