Fundão [ fũˈdɐ̃ũ ] is a city in Portugal with 9268 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Finds from the Bronze Age prove a settlement since the Castro culture . From the time of the Roman occupation are u. a. Villas and apartment buildings have been found. The current place was probably created in connection with the repopulation of the area during the Reconquista and the establishment of the independent Kingdom of Portugal in 1140.
In the surveys under King D. Dinis in 1314, the place is listed as a larger municipality. Only in the course of the 15th and especially the 16th century did the place develop more significantly when Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition also settled here. As a result, the population grew and early manufactories emerged. The establishment of the Real Fábrica-Escola (English: royal factory and school) by the Marquês de Pombal in the 17th century marked a further development of the place, especially through the textile industry and wool processing. In 1747 it became the seat of its own circle.
The Fundão, which has been run as a vila (small town) since 1747, was elevated to a cidade (town) in 1988 .
Culture, sports and sights
The numerous monuments of the place include a multitude of sacred buildings , mansions and fountains, as well as various historical public buildings. Today's town hall ( Câmara Municipal ) is housed in the former Real Fábrica de Lanifícios do Fundão , the textile factory and school founded by the Marquês de Pombal in 1755. The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.
The international short film festival Imago - International Young Film Festival has been taking place in the listed cinema Cine-Teatro Gardunha since 1998 .
The Associação Desportiva do Fundão , founded in 1955, is the most important sports club in the district. He is best known for his futsal department, which plays in the first Portuguese league and plays its home games in the municipal sports complex Pavilhão Municipal do Fundão .
