Joaquim Guerra

Joaquim Angélico de Jesus Guerra (born April 8, 1908 in Lavacolhos , † 1993 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese missionary in China who became known as a sinologist .

Life

After joining the Jesuits as a novice in the seminary in Oya, Galicia in 1925 , he went to China as a missionary in 1933 . On June 3, 1937, he was called to Shanghai . After his expulsion in 1951, he settled in what was then the Portuguese possession of Macau , where he devoted himself to the establishment of schools and sinology.

Since 1970 he has published various works, including a Chinese-Portuguese dictionary, works on linguistics and phonetics of Chinese languages , and translations of works by Confucius and other Chinese classics, including the ten-volume collection Clássicos Chineses , published between 1974 and 1984 , in which he in addition to his translations also published the original Chinese texts with extensive commentaries.

Since then he has been regarded as an important sinologist. In particular, his internationally published Structural Semantics (1980) are cited in Western considerations such as Confucius.

On his 100th birthday, an exhibition with various lectures was held in Macau. He was also remembered for the occasion with events in his home district town of Fundão .
