Lavacolhos is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Fundão . 236 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).

history

A settlement called Lava collus existed here under Roman occupation . Today's place was built around 1580. The first official mention can be found in a municipal register in the National Archives Torre do Tombo from 1649. The name found its present form from Lava collus via Lavacollos and Lavacolos .

The Jesuit missionary Joaquim Angélico Guerra (1908–1993) was born here. He worked in China. After his expulsion from Shanghai in 1937, he settled in Macau . He is considered to be an important sinologist , he also worked as a translator and wrote a Chinese-Portuguese dictionary.

Culture and sights

One of the local monuments , in addition to various sacred buildings , is today's Centro de Dia do Sagrado Coração de Jesus nursing home , a building from the 17th century. The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.
