Alcaide is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Fundão . It has 616 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

The place was probably created in the course of the repopulation of the area during the Reconquista and the consolidation of the Kingdom of Portugal, which has been independent since 1140 . A first church was built here in the 13th century. King Manuel I created the independent circle of Alcaide in 1515, which existed until the 19th century. Since then, Alcaide has been a municipality in the Fundão district.

Culture and sights

Among the monuments are the church, next to the elementary school, the park Jardim do Dr. Fernão Vaz Pinto and the historic town hall, above all a number of sacred buildings , in particular the Mannerist - Baroque parish church Igreja Paroquial de Alcaide (also Igreja de São Pedro ) from the 16th century, which dates back to a first church from the 13th century .
