The river has its source 50 km northeast of Cochrane . It flows in a north-westerly direction. It flows through the two lakes Little Abitibi Lake and Pierre Lake . The 200 km long river continues its course to the northwest. The river is dammed 70 km above its mouth by the Newpost Creek Diversion Dam . Some of the water is taken from the river and fed to Newpost Creek , which flows westward below the Abitibi Canyon hydropower plant and flows into the Abitibi River.
