It flows from Lake Abitibi in a northwest direction and flows into the Moose River , which flows to James Bay . The Abitibi River has - measured from the end of Lac Loïs - a length of about 540 km.
The river used to be an important route in the fur trade of the Hudson's Bay Company . Today, the wood and paper industry is an important factor in the heavily forested region through which the Abitibi River flows.
The Abitibi River flows past the town of Iroquois Falls , which is named after the nearby waterfalls on the river.
