The Black River (English for "black river") is a 105 km long left tributary of the Abitibi River in the north of the Canadian province of Ontario .
The Black River has its origin on the Canadian Shield in a small nameless lake at an altitude of 357 m . This is one kilometer north of the runway at Kirkland Lake Airport , 9.5 km northeast of the community of Kirkland Lake . The Black River initially flows 20 km north through Esker Lakes Provincial Park . He then turns west for the next 25 kilometers. Eventually it flows to the northwest on its remaining stretch of river. The village of Ramore is 45 km above the estuary, one kilometer west of the river. After another 25 kilometers, the Black River passes the village of Matheson . Matheson is the administrative center of the Black River-Matheson township , which includes Matheson and Ramore as well as other settlements in the area. The Ontario Highway 11 ( Trans-Canada Highway ) runs west of the river. The Black River flows into the Abitibi River 8 km south of Iroquois Falls . Due to its damming, the Black River is dammed back to Matheson. This section of the river belongs to the Abitibi-De-Troyes Provincial Park . Major tributaries of the Black River are the Pike River and Shallow River from the right and the Driftwood River from the left. The catchment area covers about 3180 km².
