The Resolute Forest Products group emerged from the merger of Abitibi-Consolidated from Canada and Bowater Inc. from the United States . The company is the world's largest producer of newsprint and a leading manufacturer of other paper products.
Bowater owns 19 paper mills and 20 sawmills in the United States, Canada, and South Korea . The company also owns over 565,000 hectares of forest in the United States and Canada and the timber rights to over 12 million hectares in Canadian forests.
The product range consists largely of paper for newspapers and magazines. In addition, Bowater sells wood pulp to other paper manufacturers and wood products from its sawmills. Bowater is not only a producer but also one of the largest recyclers of newsprint and magazine paper.

- 1881: Founded as a paper dealer in London ( Great Britain ) by WV Bowater
- 1923: Transformation from paper dealer to paper producer
- 1938: First North American manufacturing facility in Corner Brook , Newfoundland
- 1984: Conversion to a public company and listing on the New York Stock Exchange
- 1998: Takeover of the competitor Avenor Inc. based in Montreal and five additional production sites
- 2001: Acquisition of Alliance Forest Products , based in Montreal, with three paper mills and ten sawmills
- Merger with Abitibi-Consolidated
On January 29, 2007, Bowater and Abitibi-Consolidated announced their merger to form the new AbitibiBowater Inc. group. The merger of the two companies creates the third largest paper manufacturer in North America and the eighth largest in the world. The company's headquarters will be in Montreal , Canada. On July 1, 2012, the company was renamed Resolute Forest Products.
