Fairmont is a city in West Virginia , in the United States of America . Her nickname is the friendly city . According to 2010, it has 18,704 inhabitants. It is the county seat of Marion County .
history
Oral history suggests that in 1808 Boaz Fleming moved to Clarksburg annually to pay his brother Harrison County tax and his own Monongalia County tax. While at a social event in Clarksburg, he visited his cousin Dolley Madison and complained about this very long annual trip. Dolley Madison suggested that he make his own county so that he wouldn't have to travel that long a year. After six years, Boaz Fleming tried to collect signatures for a new county, with the proposed name Madison County ( in honor of Dolley Madison and her husband James Madison ). This petition was unsuccessful in getting sufficient support. Then he concentrated on building a town. In 1819 a road from Clarksburg to Morgantown was formed. His farm was in an area between these cities and was a good resting place for travelers. He founded the small town in 1819 on the western side of the Monongahela River . This town was registered as Middletown on January 19, 1820.
It is not clear whether the city was called by this name because of its location between Clarksburg and Morgantown or because of the city of origin of Boaz Fleming's first wife, who was Middletown , Delaware . In 1842, William Haymond suggested that the name of the town be changed to Fairmont (fair = beautiful + mount = mountain) because the town had a beautiful view of the Monongahela River. This name was registered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1843 .
