The Janitor is a 1994 Canadian animated short film directed by Vanessa Schwartz .

action

A plump man appears with a broom in hand. It is the heavenly caretaker who was personally hired by none other than God. The somewhat clumsy caretaker, who has to clean the moon, for example, reports that one day he was responsible for whitewashing Mars with red paint. However, he had forgotten his notebook and had chosen the wrong color. He had to get a new color, forgetting that he had been turning on the rain all along. He now watered the earth for 40 days while repainting Mars. Thanks to Noah, however , the flood ended safely. The caretaker tells of other events in the Bible, such as his involuntary involvement in the ascension of Christ . So the biblical events turn out to be attempts by the caretaker to correct his own mistakes.

production

The Janitor was filmed by Vanessa Schwartz during her bachelor's degree at CalArts . The film was animated with pencil on paper. The plot is based on the monologue of the same name by Geoffrey Lewis , which Schwartz had heard on an album in the late 1980s. The monologue is also spoken by Lewis in the film.

Schwartz began working on the film in the late 1980s. She continued on with the National Film Board of Canada in Vancouver for several months before returning to CalArts in late 1992. She continued to work on her film here, the animation of which she completed in the summer of 1993 at Bill Melendez Productions. Sound recordings followed, so that the film was completed in January 1994.

Awards

The Janitor won the 1994 Student Academy Awards gold medal in the Animation category. The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 1995 , but could not prevail against Bob's Birthday .
