Bob's Birthday is a 1993 Canadian-British animated short film directed by David Fine and Alison Snowden .

action

Margaret Fish is secretly preparing a 40th birthday celebration for her husband. Bob, who works as a dentist , thinks a restaurant visit is planned for the evening. Dealing with patients, one of whom tells him that there is a high suicide rate among dentists and another gives him a toilet paper holder , plunges him into a mid-life crisis . In addition, he secretly raves about his office hours assistant, who works the plants with delousing agents all day long and thus ensures constant leaf fall.

In the shared house, Margaret sees Bob come home. She asks the numerous guests to hide and only appear when they hear the word “surprise”. Bob, however, eats himself without greeting Margaret and then changes his clothes - he appears only dressed in a shirt and tie and refuses to put on trousers because the curtains are finally drawn. He begins to question his life and realizes that any friend the two of them are actually incredibly boring. He asks Margaret if she would like to have children, if she still finds him attractive and if he should quit his job. In the end, he gets into the car and waits for Margaret to drive to dinner as planned. After a short pause, Margaret turns off the lights in the house and follows him. When the car has disappeared, the guests slowly emerge from their hiding places in the dark.
