The President of this year's international jury was the Briton Jeremy Thomas . Golden Bear : The film In the Name of the Father by Jim Sheridan received the Golden Bear .
Silver bears were distributed in the following categories:

- Best Actress: Crissy Rock for Ladybird, Ladybird (her film debut)
- Best Actor: Tom Hanks for Philadelphia
- For an outstanding individual achievement: Alain Resnais
- For a special artistic achievement: Semjon Aranowitsch

Honorary Golden Bear

Sophia Loren received an Honorary Golden Bear for her life's work .

Children's film festival

This year, at the Berlinale Children's Film Festival, the Transparent Bear was awarded for the first time . The first winner was the Australian film Matilda Bell by David Elfick .
