Nelson Pereira dos Santos (born October 22, 1928 in São Paulo , † April 21, 2018 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian film director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Dos Santos first studied law and worked as a lawyer. From 1949 he made documentaries and worked as an assistant director. His first feature film that he directed was Rio at 40 degrees in 1954 . The film, which is set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro , was, like other works by Pereira dos Santos, shaped by Italian neorealism . From hunger for love in 1968, his films became increasingly fantastic and grotesque character. One of his best-known films is the black comedy My Little French Was Very Tasty , which was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 1971 Berlin International Film Festival .

Pereira dos Santos was a member of the Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Pereira dos Santos died in April 2018 at the age of 89 from complications from liver cancer.
