Ernst Löpfe also Löpfe-Benz (born February 5, 1878 in St. Gallen , † November 8, 1970 in Rorschach , reformed , entitled to live in Gaiserwald , since 1906 in Rorschach) was a Swiss publisher and politician (FDP) .

biography

Ernst Löpfe was born on February 5, 1878 in St. Gallen as the son of Josef Anton Löpfe and Susanna born Heerensberger. Löpfe completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter . As a result, from 1902 he was entrusted with the management of the "Wilhelm Koch printing house" in Rorschach. In addition, he acted as the political editor of the liberal newspaper "Ostschweizer Wochenblatt" , and from 1913 on "Ostschweizer Tagblatt" .

In 1909 Ernst Löpfe acquired this printing company and expanded it into the medium-sized "Printing and Publishing Company Löpfe-Benz" , which existed until 2000 and published the Nebelspalter from 1922 to 2000 and the Ostschweizer Tagblatt from 1927 to 1963.

Ernst Löpfe was made an honorary citizen of the municipality of Rorschach in 1956 .

Ernst Löpfe was married to Rosa, the daughter of the industrialist Friedrich Benz. He died on November 8, 1970, three months before he was 93 years old in Rorschach.

Political career

At the beginning of his political career in 1907, Ernst Löpfe held the office of President of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) of the Rorschach district , which he held until 1915. He was also represented on the Rorschach municipal council between 1909 and 1915 and 1922 and 1927 . In 1915 he was elected to the St. Gallen Grand Council, of which he was a member until 1939. In addition, he was president of the cantonal FDP from 1929 to 1934. In addition, he took a seat on the Council of States for the canton from 1931 to 1945 .

The open-minded liberal Ernst Löpfe made a name for himself with both political and cultural accents.
