Three colors: white is the second part of the three-color trilogy by Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski about the three colors of the French flag , which symbolize freedom , equality and brotherhood . The theme of the second film in the trilogy is equality. The relationship between Karol, a Polish hairdresser, and the beautiful Dominique, on whom he turns out to be dependent, appears to be an alternative to equality.
action
When Dominique rejects Karol because he can no longer live up to her sexual passions, a world collapses for him. Destitute and hopeless, he leaves France and goes back to Poland. There he developed into a clever businessman and successfully speculated in real estate. Since everything can now be obtained for money in post-communist Poland, he buys an unidentifiable corpse and stages his own death to lure Dominique to Poland for the funeral. The plan succeeds, at first it looks like a deceitful vengeance, but ultimately the restoration of equality is his motive.
Subject
The film is cynical about the issue of equality. Nobody really wants equality, says Kieślowski. So does Karol, who doesn't want to be equality, but better than others.
Reviews
The film service praised Kieślowski's film for its performance as an actor. Three colors: White is disappointing, however, "because its references to the topic of 'equality' remain vague and storylines and motifs stand side by side" .
Awards
At the 1994 Berlin International Film Festival , Drei Farben: Weiß was nominated for the Golden Bear and awarded a Silver Bear for Best Director.
