Vanessa Schwartz
Vanessa Stella Schwartz (* 1969/1970 in Canada ) is a Chilean-Canadian animator .
Life
Schwartz grew up in Vancouver and came to CalArts in Valencia , California in 1988 to study costume design. Jules Engel was impressed by her drawing designs and advised her to choose animation as a major. Shortly after starting her studies, she heard the monologue The Janitor by Geoffrey Lewis for the first time , which she wanted to make as a short animation film. After two years, however, she gave up her studies and returned to Vancouver. At the National Film Board of Canada there , she developed the idea of the short film further and found her own drawing style. After nine months she returned to CalArts at the end of 1992 and continued working on her film, the animation of which she completed in the summer of 1993 at Bill Melendez Productions. Sound recordings followed, so that the film was completed in January 1994. It won the 1994 Student Academy Awards gold medal in the Animation category and was nominated for an Oscar in 1995 in the Best Animated Short Film category.
Schwartz received a scholarship from the Princess Grace USA Foundation and completed her Masters in Experimental Animation from CalArts. She then worked as an animator for Pacific Data Images on the film Antz . Schwartz is also active as a lecturer in animation and has taught at the San Francisco Academy of Art and at the California College of the Arts in Oakland, among others. In spring 2013 she teaches animation at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design . Schwartz also works as an illustrator.
