Sports broadcast rights
Sports broadcast rights are the rights to broadcast sports events.
Legal foundations
In jurisprudence it is examined and disputed in court whether and to what extent protection of intellectual property , ancillary services and house rules of the organizer are fundamentally and in individual cases affected when sports events are broadcast.
The legal basis for sports broadcasting rights is provided by § 2, § 81 UrhG , fairness regulations § 3, § 4 No. 9 UWG, the general tort law of the BGB (§§ 823, Paragraph 1, 1004), the personal rights of athletes regulated in the KUG .
Procedure and funding
Sports broadcasting rights are sold by the organizers to the highest bidder broadcaster in an auction process .
Suspected cartel formation
Before April 12, 2018, the EU Commission had several companies in various EU countries searched on suspicion of antitrust violations in the sports broadcasting business. The company Fox Network Group explained to cooperate with the authorities.
