Nicholas Lou Saban (* 31 October 1951 in Fairmont , West Virginia ) is an American American football trainer of Croatian descent. He has been the head coach of the University of Alabama college football team since January 2007 .

He began his career as a player at Kent State University , for which he played from 1970 to 1972 as a defensive back . He then worked as an assistant coach for various college teams until 1989. In 1990 he finally looked after his first team as head coach with the Toledo Rockets from the University of Toledo . After only one year, he moved to the Cleveland Browns in the National Football League (NFL) to work as a defensive coordinator . Between 1995 and 1999 he coached a college team again - Michigan State University . In 2000 he went to Louisiana State University (LSU) for four years . With LSU he was able to win the Sugar Bowl in 2001 and 2003 , which in 2003 was also the BCS National Championship Game . After the 2003 win, he was also named National Coach of the Year by the Associated Press and won the Paul Bryant Award for Best College Coach of the Year . In 2005 he went back to the NFL for two years and trained the Miami Dolphins there . In 2007 he finally moved to the University of Alabama , with which he was able to win the BCS National Championship Game again in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2017.
